We like walking. Not just long distance walks, not always holidays abroad. Here are a few photo galleries from our other walks ...
As we both work for the Environment Agency, in 2005 we took part in the annual Munro Challenge organised by our adopted charity, Water Aid.The challenge was to raise as much sponsorship as possible, by getting a team on top of every Munro in the UK between noon and two o'clock on Saturday the 11th June. Our alloted peak was An Caisteal (995m) which was relatively easy.Good news is that the Munro Challenge was completed in style - the first time the feat had been completed, despite several previous attempts. HOORAH !!
Arrived in Keswick on Saturday and bought some new boots at George Fischer. Spent the rest of the week breaking them in.Some good walks: Red Screes; Bowfell and Crinkle Crags; a ridge walk along Buttermere; a gentle stroll from Tarn Hows to Coniston and back.
Taking advantage of the break between Covid lockdowns, and our pre-booked accommodation (we had originally intended to walk the Bracken Way), we drove up to the Dales for a week. We completed a circular day walk from each of our overnight stays before driving to the next location. The weather was generally hot and sunny, although on 'the tops' we were often walking in the clouds.
A seven-night stay in a lovely litttle cottage in the Peak District village of Tideswell in April 2023.The location was perfect. We could walk in any direction, directly from the cottage, for fantastic and varied walks in the stunning countryside. The village also had a good collection of pubs, restaurants and shops to ensure we had easy access to all the provisions we needed. The weather was mixed, ranging from sharp downpours to bright sunshine, but much of the time we were blasted by a very cold northerly wind.
A ramble through Wensleydale, Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, in the Yorkshire Dales.Five days point-to-point walking, and three circulr walks in gorgeous Dales scenery. Our route, accommodation and baggage transfer were arranged by a local company, Muddy Boots.
A short stay at HF Holidays 'Peverill of the Peak' hotel just outside the village of Thorpe in the Peak District. We chose a four night self-guided holiday. As might be expected mid-February, we spent most of our time in waterproofs!
Walks from a cosy house in Giggleswick.
Being early March, the weather was not perticularly great - mostly overcast and drizzly with a strong, cold, wind - but we got out and did some good walks.
We also visited a couple of local attractions (when the weather was particularly inclement) and enjoyed the hospitality afforded by several local pubs and eateries ...
A three-day break in Woodhall Spa.We stayed in a spacious Bed & Breakfast located very handily for the local amenities , and managed two walks, two evening meals and a visit to a local nature reserve.All-in-all a fantastic break.
Staying for a week in a convenient one-bedroom flat in Brampton town centre. We completed several local circular walks - a couple from the flat, a couple following a short drive - and took the opportunity to visit Annan and Moffat in Dumfries & Galloway, and Keswick in the Lake District - both less than an hour's drive away.
A four-night self-guided walking break with HF Holidays. Staying at Longmynd House in Church Stretton.Enroute we stopped off for a quick look around Shrewsbury.Weather was fantastic for the end of October - we even walked in shirt sleeves at one point.
A couple of nights in Suffolk to explore Bury St Edmunds and surrounding area.
A week in Skipton, a lovely town on the southern border of the Yorkshire Dales.A great location for a variety of walks - from the town itself, extending into The Dales, and even within easy reach of The Lake District. The kind of place one could retire to ....
A week of walking in the Dumfrieshire Dales, based in Moffat.
The weather was very mixed - changing, from one moment to the next, from heavy downpours to drizzle to bright sunshine. Ground conditions were almost constantly wet and squelchy underfoot, but nonetheless, we had some lovely walks.
A great location for a walking holiday, with options available from gentle rambles to very challenging. There are also lots of options for eating out.
